Sir Frank Wappat

It was back in the 1970's that a racing dog owner asked me if she could name her dog after me! The do was a racing dog and was aptly named "Wappat's Wippet"., and it ran many races on the dog tracks at Brough Park in Newcastle. This proved to be a suucessful partnership, and the dog went on to win many races for its owner.

In 2008, the well known Racehorse owner Paul Dean who is a great Frank Wappat Radio Fan, heard a letter I read out from one of my listeners who referred to me as “Dear Sir Frank Wappat” the listener clamed that I should be knighted for the happiness brought to so many people.

Paul Dean agreed with the listeners comments and decided to do his bit.

He was expecting delivery of a new Race Horse, and decided that come what may he would name it “SIR FRANK WAPPAT”

I told Paul that I felt really honoured to be knighted not by a Royal Stranger but someone who knew him and really appreciated what I did.

The Colt has now arrived at Paul’s stables and I intend to be one of its first visitors – we will keep you all informed of its progress, and post photographs when they are available.

Frank has just reminded me that this is not the first animal to be named after him, with Wappat’s Whippet a winning runner (1st) at Brough Park, Newcastle upon Tyne back in the 1970’s.

So we wish “Sir Frank Wappat” every success with as long and successful a career as Frank Wappat himself – “A Sure Winner”.
